NRP is an educational program that introduces the concepts and skills of neonatal resuscitation. In Canada, NRP is administered by the Canadian Paediatric Society and is designed to teach individuals and teams who may be required to resuscitate newborn babies. NRP course content is evidence-based and delivered across Canada in both English and French to over 51,000 health care professionals.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT NRP TRAINING

Third-party providers unaffiliated with the Canadian Paediatric Society are claiming to offer neonatal resuscitation “certification” or “training”. These are NOT recognized Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) training in Canada.

The Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS), the only organization licensed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association to administer the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) in Canada, sets the national standards for NRP Providers, Instructors, Instructor Trainers, and courses.

To ensure you are in an approved NRP training course, ensure it:

• is affiliated with an accredited university, college and/or healthcare institution,
• covers all required Canadian NRP course content and skills assessments, including standardized individual integrated skills stations, simulation and debriefing, and must be at least 4 hours and offered in person, 
• is being taught by an NRP Instructor with valid NRP status.

9th Edition Implementation 

• Teaching Start Date - All Instructors should now be teaching the 9th Edition.
• Instructor requirements
  • Complete the NRP 9th Edition Online Learning Assessment (Advanced) (OLA) on PediaSkills (formerly RQI Partners)
  • Complete any provincially required 9th Edition Instructor Update activities (requirements may vary by province).
• Providers are expected to be updated by January 2027.
• National Practice Requirements – All NRP professionals and organizations should be fully transitioned to the NRP 9th Edition by January 2027.
