Canadian Paediatric Society

Background

The era of globalization has led to significant changes impacting on health care, yet medical education in the developed world has remained domestically focused. Canadian paediatricians are caring for growing numbers of new immigrants and refugees and their training should reflect these changes. Although international electives are widely permitted by residents, global child health (GCH) issues are not formally taught as part of the four year Canadian paediatric residency curriculum.

In 2007 the CPS Global Child and Youth Health (GCYH) Section conducted a needs assessment of Program Directors and Chief Residents from 16 Canadian paediatric residency training programs to identify critical formal training deficiencies in GCH topics. Survey respondents described an under representation of key GCH topics and yet over 85% of respondents felt GCH was important for paediatric trainees and should be emphasized in their training. Eighty-six percent of Program Directors agreed their program would be interested in new GCH initiatives, especially those which could be incorporated into their core educational components

Based on these results, the section formed an 17 member national GCH Curriculum Working Group to design and evaluate GCH modules which could be integrated Canada-wide into the existing curriculum. Work began on the modules in 2008 and were completed and launched at a workshop at the CPS Annual Conference in June 2011.
