A wild poliovirus type 1 outbreak is currently affecting Tajikistan, a region previously certified polio-free. As of June 1, 2010, there were more than 183 reported cases.
To prevent an outbreak, a country needs a poliovirus immunization rate of 90%. The polio outbreak in Tajikistan demonstrates what can happen when immunization rates fall below 90% and wild polio is introduced. The 2008 rate of uptake of oral polio
vaccine in Tajikistan was reported to be 87%.1
The Canadian Paediatric Society is reminding physicians to be alert for cases of acute flaccid paralysis, which is characterized by the weakening or the loss of muscle tone. If a case is suspected, report it right away and ensure that stool specimens are collected within two weeks for testing for wild poliovirus.2 Remember also to report all cases of acute flaccid paralysis to the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program.
