Canada’s definitive guide to health and safety in child care now available
OTTAWA – When parents look for child care, they want to ensure their children are safe and protected. But more than ever, they are also looking for an environment where children will be nurtured, stimulated, valued and part of a caring community. Increasingly, quality child care is seen as a critical element of preparing children for school entry and for success later in life. The expectations of people who plan and deliver child care have never been greater.
That’s why the Canadian Paediatric Society has launched a new edition of Well Beings: A Guide to Health in Child Care. This comprehensive reference is a must for child care and public health professionals. With so much information on the daily care, health and safety of children from birth to preschool, it is also essential resource for physicians and parents.
“Well Beings is authoritative, comprehensive but most of all practical,” said Dr. Grenier, one of the book’s co-editors, the CPS’ Medical Affairs Officer and a community paediatrician in Gatineau, Quebec. “We wanted this edition to be as relevant as possible for those working in the field, so we developed a strong collaboration with the child care and public health communities.”
“This new edition of Well Beings consolidates the recommendations of Canada's experts in paediatrics to establish the most current guidelines, and provides the gold standard for child care in this country,” said Dr. Denis Leduc, also a co-editor and a former CPS president who practices in Montreal.
Well Beings is based on two fundamental principles: securing the health and safety of children and their right to a nurturing and stimulating child care environment. An important feature of this book is how it encourages meaningful inclusion of children with special needs. It offers guidance on how to ensure that all children benefit from quality childhood learning and care.
The book’s co-editors were supported by a network of Canadian experts in medicine, early childhood education, child care, public health, and many other disciplines. The book covers an impressive list of topics including nutrition, dental health, preventing and managing infections, safety and injury prevention, common and chronic medical conditions, emergencies, the inclusion of children with special needs, protecting children from maltreatment and the physical and emotional health of children as well as their caregivers.
First published in 1992, Well Beings is the definitive guide to health and safety in child care settings. It is now available for purchase in both English and French. The book’s development was funded through a grant from the Government of Canada's Social Development Partnerships Program.
An online companion to the book, featuring printable handouts, links to additional resources and information for sharing with families, is available through the Caring for Kids website at www.caringforkids.cps.ca.
