Distinguished Neonatologist Award

The Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Section established the Distinguished Neonatologist Award in 1995 to honour recognize sustained contributions to the field of neonatology.

The award is presented during the CPS Annual Conference and the recipient receives a commemorative award at a dinner in their honour.

Awarded every other year, the next award will be presented in 2024.

Current recipient(s): Dr. Khalid Aziz

Dr. Khalid Aziz

Dr. Khalid Aziz is Professor of Pediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and medial director of quality improvement in the Office of Lifelong Learning at University of Alberta in Edmonton.  He is also a staff neonatologist in the Edmonton Neonatal Program and Stollery Children's Hospital.

Dr. Aziz is a graduate of Guy’s Hospital Medical School, London University and received  bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Cambridge University. He trained in family practice in the U.K. then in paediatrics in Harrow and Oxford, England. After training as a neonatologist in Edmonton, Dr. Aziz worked as a general paediatrician in Lethbridge, Alberta in the early 1990s. From 1996 to 2007, he was a neonatologist at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and was on faculty at Memorial University, where he received his MEd in information technology.

Dr. Aziz was a founding member of the Acute Care of at-Risk Newborns (ACoRN) program in 1999, and continues to be involved, contributing to the course building and co-authoring the ACoRN textbook. Dr. Aziz currently serves on the ACoRN education and steering committees.

ACoRN was inspired by Dr. Aziz’s participation in the CPS Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) committee, which he chaired from 2008 to 2012. He helped develop and continues to be a part of Evidence-based Practice for Improving Quality (EPIC), which has helped to reduce mortality and morbidity among newborns in Canada over the last 10 to 15 years. Dr. Aziz has also worked to introduce EPIC to other countries, including Australia, Ethiopia, China and India.
