“Yes, doctor, I do smoke every day.  Oh, did you mean cigarettes?  Oh, no. I would never smoke cigarettes.  They are bad for you.”

Do you ever feel at a loss about how to respond to an adolescent who tells you they are smoking marijuana regularly? Do you wonder about the latest information on the health effects of marijuana? If so, then the Adolescent Health Section’s sponsored session at this year’s Annual Conference is for you. Dr. Rob Milin and Selena Walker, MSW, will teach us the latest on cannabis use and dependence in the context of the adolescent brain. Please join us on Thursday, June 16 at 10:30 am in the Beauport Room of the Hilton Québec Hotel.

Then, please join us again for our section business meeting on Friday, June 17, at the cheery hour of 7 am (Plaines Room). We look forward to seeing you there!

Allergy Section

Let's spring into action!

The Annual Conference is fast approaching and I look forward to seeing you there. Mark your calendars: Our workshop entitled "Allergic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract:  Focus on eosinophilic esophagitis and food protein induced enteropathy syndrome," is scheduled for Friday, June 17, at 1:15 pm (in the Bélair Room, of the Hilton Québec Hotel). Our two speakers, Drs. Nestor Cisneros and Bob Issenman, bring expertise from the specialties of allergy and gastroenterology to the discussion of these challenging conditions.

The section business meeting is scheduled on the same day, Friday, June 17, at 7 am in Room 2104B of the Quebec City Convention Centre. Please plan to attend and voice your opinions on the section’s future. We will discuss programming ideas for the 2012 Annual Conference and address areas where our section could be more active or vocal.  Your suggestions for stimulating interest in the section among young physicians are most welcome. One such proposal is the creation of a travel grant to attend the Annual Conference for residents or fellows in allergy training.

On behalf of the section executive I would like to wish each one of you a happy spring.  See you in Quebec City!

Several section members have been working with the Acute Care Committee on national guidelines relevant to hospital-based practice. These include guidelines on management of status epilepticus. For full text and pdfs of the guidelines, visit www.cps.ca/english/publications/EmergPaediatrics.htm.

This year we are again supporting a resident bursary for an outstanding presentation of hospital-based work (in research, education or quality improvement) at a major meeting.  We hope to announce the award winner at this year’s CPS Annual Conference in June.

We look forward to seeing you in Quebec City, and at these section events:

  1. Wednesday, June 15 at 8-11:30 am – Questions that bug you: A town hall discussion of controversies in infectious diseases in the hospitalized child. This is an interactive session on infectious diseases (UTIs, osteomyelitis and encephalitis) in the hospitalized child, with infectious disease and hospital general paediatric speakers.

  2. Wednesday, June 15, 1:45-3:15 pm – What’s new in hospital paediatrics? This journal club session reviews the top articles over the past year.

Mental Health Section

At this year’s Annual Conference, on Wednesday, June 15 (8-11:30 am), the Mental Health Section is hosting the session “What paediatricians need to know about FASD: Pre-birth through adolescence.” Drs. Sterling Clarren and Gail Andrew, two of Canada’—indeed, North America’s—top experts on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder, will discuss current knowledge of the syndrome as well as practical aspects of screening and diagnosis. In addition, an FASD toolkit, just released, will be introduced. The needs and presentation of these patients change with age and paediatricians need to be prepared to educate and guide their families and caregivers.

The section’s business meeting is being held on Thursday June 16 (7-9 am), in room 204B of the Quebec City Convention Centre.

The Mental Health Screening Tool website at www.cps.ca is being revamped by the Developmental and Mental Health Committee. We welcome input about developmental and mental health tools that you find useful in your practice or clinic and think others might want to utilize. Please send these to our section for vetting.

Catch Your Breath in Quebec for Neonatal Day

The Annual Conference is fast approaching and few places are more beautiful in the late spring than historic Quebec City. If the city, its history and its unique vibe are not enough to draw you to the conference, the exciting program we have lined up for Neonatal Day on Wednesday, June 15 should seal the deal. The section executive has planned a full day of activities focusing on ventilation, from basic science concepts about the control and development of breathing through to updates on current trials of non-invasive ventilation methods. The day will begin with a selection of excellent original science presentations, followed by our five guest speakers from across Canada and the U.S. This year we will be awarding the Distinguished Neonatologist Award to Dr. Reginald Sauve at the dinner given in his honour on Wednesday evening. Thursday’s activities include the business meeting (from 7-9 am in the Beauport Room of the Hilton, Québec Hotel), and the poster session.

The executive invite you to contact them with ideas for topics, speakers and programs for the web page, the CPS newsletter and future conferences.

Hope to see you all in Quebec!

Paediatric Oral Health Section members to invade Quebec City!

This is to remind all Oral Health Section members to register online, confirm your hotel reservations and book your flights for this year’s CPS Annual Conference in Quebec City, June 15-18, 2011.

Our section is hosting Dr. Rocio Quinonez, whose talk entitled "Paediatricians on the front line: Collaborations between medicine and dentistry to address early childhood oral health" is being held on Thursday, June 16, from 10:30-11:30 am in the Saint-Louis Room of the Hilton, Québec Hotel. Our section’s business meeting will be the next day (Friday, June 17) from 7-8:30 am in the Beaumont Room. The focus of the business meeting will be to review our section's contribution to the Community Paediatric Committee's position statement on paediatric oral health. We’ll also consider progress on getting the CPS fluoride position statement into line with new guidelines from the CDA and Health Canada. I hope to get Paediatric Oral Health Section members and friends together for dinner on Thursday, June 16 and will keep everyone apprised as dinner plans develop.

See you in Quebec City in June.

Residents Section

Spring is in the air and there's a lot coming up for our residents...

Once again, the Residents Section is very excited about the CPS Annual Conference! We have a full slate of events planned, including our residents advocacy reception on Wednesday evening, featuring Dr. Leila Srour on taking on the big formula companies in Southeast Asia. We're also really looking forward to a night on the town in Quebec City, planned by our members at Laval, a concurrent seminar on becoming an academic paediatrician (Friday morning from 8-9 am), and our annual showcase of residents’ research.

This spring, section members were given the results of an analysis of projected need for subspecialists in paediatrics, done by the Paediatric Chairs of Canada. It was an interesting survey and gave our members some food for thought at a time when many of us were contemplating future career directions.

We're also continuing to update elective databases and planning for a resident advocacy day on injury prevention in May. As well, some of our members are right in the thick of applying for subspecialty training positions through the CaRMS subspecialty match, now in its second year.

We hope to see everyone in Quebec City at the Annual Conference!

Thanks,

Gillian Dolansky

The 7th annual “Practice What You Preach 5K Walk/8K Run” will take place on the Plains of Abraham on Friday, June 17 from 5-7 pm. This event is co-hosted by the CPS Healthy Generations Foundation and our section. Following the run, there will be a reception with refreshments and prize draws.
