This year at the annual conference in Ottawa in June, the section is hosting a half-day session on Tuesday, June 23 entitled, “Getting to the Podium: Elite Child Athletes”. The first part of the session will be devoted to Becky Scott, an Olympic cross-country skier and athlete ambassador with Right to Play. Becky will speak about programs sponsored by Right to Play for children in underdeveloped countries. The second part of the session will be a panel discussion about issues in children who are participating in sports at an elite level. Dr. Margo Mountjoy will speak on initiatives of the International Olympic Committee with respect to child athletes. Becky Scott will talk about her own experiences competing in sport at an elite level. Then Dr. Joel Brenner will speak about overuse injuries and overtraining in child athletes.
The fifth annual “Practice What You Preach 5km Walk/Run” will take place along the Rideau Canal on Friday, June 26 from 1700-1900. This event is co-hosted by Healthy Generations and our section. Following the run, there will be a reception with refreshments and draw prizes.
