Lots to learn in Ottawa this June!
The CPS Annual Conference Program offers several terrific sessions on child protection and child maltreatment topics this year.
First, on Wednesday June 24 from 1330-1500, the Child and Youth Maltreatment Section is hosting a concurrent seminar on “Internet and New Technology Risks for Children and Youth”. This session will be presented by Dr. Sue Bennett, Tanya Deurvorst Smith and Roberta Sinclair PhD. They will highlight the risks, review evidence from national and international research and provide practical resources for practitioners to use with children and their families.
A second concurrent seminar on Thursday June 25 from 1000-1130 is titled, “Recent Headlines in the News: Controversies in Inflicted Head Trauma”. In this seminar, Drs. Michelle Shouldice and Michelle Ward will tackle current issues in the identification of non-accidental head injuries. Recent Canadian epidemiological data profiling with clinical presentations and morbidity, and some controversial aspects of this diagnosis will be discussed.
In addition, two workshops are available for conference attendees;
- Child Sexual Abuse: Medical and Psychosocial Perspectives
presented by Claire Allard-Dansereau MD & Martine Hébert PhD
Workshop Session 1 - Thursday June 25th 1330 -1500
- Communicating for Prevention: How Discussing Sexual Behaviour, Infant Crying and Discipline Can Help
presented by Michelle Ward MD
Workshop Session 3 - Saturday June 27th 0830 -1000
Our section interests include the establishment of a physician communication network,
web-based educational conferencing and protection program database development. All paediatricians interested in child and youth maltreatment are invited to attend our section business meeting on Wednesday, June 24th, when these and other topics will be discussed. Your ideas and participation are welcomed.
