Physicians with interest in adolescent health will see at the annual meeting in Ottawa that again this year we will have a joint half day, co-hosted by the Adolescent Health and Mental Health sections. This half day, on June 23rd ( 8:00-11:30 ) 2009 will be on ``Practical approach to cognitive behavioural therapy in the paediatrician's office``. Participants in this workshop will develop their knowledge and practical clinical skills in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as applied to adolescents with mood and anxiety disorders. The executive thanks Dr. Sheri Findlay for representing our section in the development of this project.
Following this interesting morning, we will hosted as section at 13:30-15:00 , the seminar on ``Practical approaches to adolescents with alcohol and other substance abuse`` presented by Karen Leslie MD and John Westland. This case-based seminar will present an overview of current trends in adolescent substance use and abuse and will introduce participants to brief screening and interventional mehods that can be utilized in an office-based setting.
Finally, there will be on Saturday June 27, a concurrent workshop on`` Teen talk: The role of effective communication in improving outcomes`` with Miriam Kaufman and Margo Lane MD. This interactive workshop will use cases to launch lively discussion addressing the challenges of caring for adolescents.
The adolescent health section business meeting will be on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 07:30 and is open to all with interest in adolescent health. We'd love to see section members and non-members there to discuss the adolescent content for upcoming conferences and your needs in adolescent health care.
This is the end of my mandate as President of the section and I participated in the last Adolescent Health Committee meeting last February in Ottawa . I want to thanks that committee for their wonderful involment in Adolescent care in Canada and their production of statements.
Finally, I want to let you know that the new President of the section will be Margo Lane MD from Winnipeg , Mark Norris MD from Ottawa as President-Elect and Christina Grant MD from Hamilton as secretary-treasure. The actual Adolescent Health Section executive will have a teleconference this month to discuss the section website and the goals and objectives for the upcoming year.
