Synchronization Update
As many of you are aware, the CPS residents section has been working with the Canadian Association of Interns and Residents (CAIR), the Paediatric Chairs of Canada, Paediatric Program Directors and others to establish a synchronized process for fellowship applications. In order to guide the process we carried out a survey of Paediatric and Paediatric subspecialty residents. We received a total of 120 responses from residents at all levels of training. The results showed that 87.9% of residents support a synchronized process for applications. It was also clear from the results that residents are not in support of an algorithm-based matching system (24.7% in favour), but are not opposed to CaRMS administering the match.
Based on this feedback we were able draft an outline of the proposed application process (see attached) that was felt to meet the needs of residents and subspecialty programs. The proposal has been presented to the Post-graduate Deans medical schools in Canada and we are awaiting their final approval. The projected year for piloting the synchronized application process would be for the cohort starting subspecialty training in July 2011, however programs are asked to begin adjusting their dates for the 2010 cycle. Highlights of the proposed process include:
- a web-based application process administered by the Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS)
- Proposed application deadlines ~ 14 months prior to initiation of fellowship training (e.g. end of April 2010 for start date July 2011)
- An applicant fee of $125 to register and $20 per program
- A non-algorithmic, rolling acceptance process
We ask that every resident, but especially those considering applying for subspecialty fellowships to please review the attached draft. Further feedback would be much appreciated. We recommend that you contact any programs you may be applying to in order to clarify dates and deadlines for applications as they may be changing for this year. We will continue to provide further updates as we get closer to the first application cycle, but please don’t hesitate to contact us regarding any questions you may have.
