Professional achievements and current responsibilities:
Dr. Abelson co-edited the completely revised Seventh edition of the "Residents Handbook of Pediatrics". He completed a fellowship in Paediatric Infectious Diseases in 1988. In addition to providing paediatric locums in Canada's north, he has worked overseas in Cameroon and Tajikistan as well as for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Sudan. Since 1993, Dr. Abelson has served as a consultant paediatrician in Prince George. He is currently president of the BC Paediatric Society, President of the BC Chapter of the American Academy of Paediatrics and a clinical assistant professor at the University of British Columbia.
Educational Background: Dr. William Abelson studied medicine at U. of T, graduating in 1980. Following a rotating internship at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster BC, Dr. Abelson did locums in general practice both in BC and the arctic before doing a residency in Paediatrics. The first two years were completed at the War Memorial Children's Hospital in London, Ontario, before returning to Toronto as a senior resident and then as chief resident at the Hospital for Sick Children.
